Service Description

Our DIY course has been expertly designed to give you the basic skills required to carryout common jobs around the home. The three-day course is comprised of: • Introduction to the workshop environment, class expectations, and safe working practices including appropriate use of PPE. • Overview of common DIY tools and guidance on their safe and correct use. • Introduction to measuring tapes, including how to read measurements accurately and carry out basic measuring tasks. • Introduction to spirit levels and laser levels. • Installation of a floating shelf. • Drilling into plasterboard and identifying appropriate fixings. • Installation of a floating shelf using suitable fixings and tools. • Techniques for hanging pictures and mirrors in both landscape and portrait orientations. • Repairing damaged walls by measuring and cutting appropriate plasterboard. • Fixing replacement plasterboard and applying joint tape to reinforce the repair. • Application of caulking and silicone sealants to various surfaces and joints. • Basic plumbing repairs, such as the identification of common tap components including rubber and fibre washers. • Replacing tap washers and tap cartridges. • Introduction to push-fit and compression fittings, including advantages and limitations of each. • Diagnosing common toilet inlet and flushing issues. • Introduction to basic household electrics and safe working practices. • Wiring a standard electrical plug. • Identification of common electrical cables and wires used in domestic settings. • Replacing a light switch and changing a plug socket faceplate. • Basic DIY skills such as drilling techniques for different materials including masonry, wood, and plasterboard. • Overview of different fixings and screws and their appropriate uses. • Introduction to essential DIY tools and their practical applications. • Adjusting kitchen cabinet doors for correct alignment. • Basic joinery tasks including fitting or replacing door handles. • Replacing a uPVC window panel. • Safe and correct use of hand saws for basic cutting tasks. • Introduction to decorating, including measuring and cutting ceiling coving for installation. • Preparing surfaces and pasting and hanging lining paper. • Measuring and cutting wallpaper accurately. • Overview of different paint types and where they should be applied. • Introduction to common decorating materials including fillers, caulks, and sealants, and guidance on their correct use.
